I grew up in the 1980s and 1990s, and those decades were magical to me. The music was different. The style was bold. The way people expressed themselves was genuine and not as polished as it is today. There was something real about that era. There was something authentic about it. As I got older, I became fascinated with this idea of retro culture. I started collecting old video games, old music, old movies, and anything else that represented that golden age of entertainment.
For me, retro culture represents more than just nostalgia. It represents a time when things felt simpler, when people were not as worried about being perfect or fitting into a specific box. People in the 1980s and 1990s took risks. They tried new things. They were not afraid to be different. That spirit is something that I wanted to capture in my music and in my brand as Vintage Retroman.
When I was developing my identity as a Christian hip hop artist, I realized that I wanted to stand out. There are many Christian rappers and Christian hip hop artists out there. How could I make my mark and do something that felt unique? That is when I thought about combining my love for retro culture with my passion for Christian hip hop music. I thought about what it would look like to bring the spirit of the 1980s and 1990s into modern Christian music. That was the moment when Vintage Retroman was born.
My music carries some elements that remind people of that retro era. Whether it is the production style, the way I structure my lyrics, or the themes I talk about in my songs, there is always that connection to the past. I sample sounds and beats that have that retro feel. I reference things that people from that generation would recognize and appreciate. I wear clothing and style myself in ways that nod to that era. Everything about my brand is intentional and connected to this love of retro culture.
But here is what is really important to understand: my use of retro culture is not about living in the past. It is about bringing the best parts of the past into the present and the future. The 1980s and 1990s had a spirit of authenticity and creativity that I think we need more of today. In a world where everything feels manufactured and fake, I want my music to feel real. I want people to feel like I am speaking directly to them from my heart.

They created things that were different. In a similar way, making Christian hip hop music as a black artist from North Carolina is its own kind of rebellion. I am saying that hip hop and faith can go together. I am saying that you can love God and still love hip hop culture. That is not a normal message, just like the retro aesthetic is not a normal choice for a Christian artist in 2026.
My love for retro video games also plays a big role in my brand. Video games from the 1980s and 1990s were creative and fun and challenging in ways that modern games sometimes are not. There was a simplicity to them, but also a depth that kept you coming back. The same is true for my music. I want my lyrics to be simple enough that anyone can understand them, but also deep enough that people can listen multiple times and find new meaning in them.
The retro aesthetic also appeals to something that people are really craving right now. There is a reason why retro things are becoming popular again. People are tired. People are stressed. People are looking for something that feels real and genuine and not so complicated. When someone listens to my music and hears that retro influence, I think it takes them to a place that feels safer and more authentic. It reminds them of a time when things felt simpler, even if that time was before they were born.
I also think that retro culture and faith actually go well together. Both of them are about returning to something real and true. Faith is about going back to the foundation of what we believe. It is about stripping away everything that is fake and getting down to what is real. Retro culture does something similar. It strips away all of the noise and complexity of modern life and reminds us of what was good and true about the past.
As Vintage Retroman, I am committed to keeping this blend of retro culture and Christian hip hop at the center of everything I do. My goal is to create music that honors God, that speaks to people’s hearts, and that brings together the best parts of the past with the best parts of the present. Retro culture is not just a marketing tool for me. It is a genuine part of who I am and what I stand for.

When people ask me how I got started making Christian hip hop music, I always smile because the answer is not simple. My journey to becoming Vintage Retroman, the Hope Dealer, has been a path that I never could have planned on my own. It has been filled with moments of doubt, seasons of growth, and most importantly, a deepening relationship with God that has shaped everything I do.
I grew up listening to hip hop music. It was something that spoke to me in a way that other music did not. The beats, the rhythm, the storytelling, the way artists could paint pictures with their words, all of it fascinated me. But like many people who grow up in the church, I was taught that hip hop was not the kind of music that Christians should be making or listening to. It was considered worldly. It was considered bad. I carried that message with me for a long time, and honestly, it created a real conflict inside of me.
As I got older, I started to realize that music itself is neutral. Music is just sound and rhythm and words. What matters is what you put into that music and what the message behind it is. That realization changed everything for me. I started to understand that I could use hip hop, which I loved so much, to share the gospel and to encourage people to know Jesus Christ. That was the moment when everything clicked into place.
The road to actually making music professionally was not easy. I had to learn how to write lyrics that were authentic and real but also pointed people toward God. I had to find producers who understood my vision. I had to build a following when most people did not even know who I was. There were times when I wondered if I was wasting my time. There were times when I felt like giving up. But I kept going because I knew that God had called me to do this.
One of the biggest challenges I faced was dealing with criticism from people who thought I should not be making hip hop music at all. Some people in the church community were not supportive. They questioned whether Christian hip hop was even a real thing. They worried that I was compromising my faith to make music that sounded worldly. Those words hurt, and I will be honest, they made me question myself. But I also recognized that Jesus faced criticism too. People questioned him, they doubted him, and he kept moving forward with his purpose. That gave me strength to continue.
What really kept me going was seeing the impact my music had on people. I started getting messages from people who said that my music helped them get through a hard time. People told me that my lyrics reminded them that God was real and that he cared about them. Some people told me that my music helped them find faith in Jesus for the first time. That is when I truly understood why God had called me to do this. It was not about me becoming famous or making money. It was about being a messenger of hope to people who needed to hear it.
Over the years, I have released multiple albums and singles. Each project has taught me something new. Each project has deepened my relationship with God and strengthened my understanding of what it means to be a Christian artist. I have performed at churches, at community events, and online. I have connected with other Christian hip hop artists who understood my vision. I have built a community of people who believe that faith and hip hop can go together beautifully.
My journey as a Christian hip hop artist has also taught me about persistence and faith. There were times when I did not know how I would pay my bills or how I would continue making music. But God always came through. God always provided what I needed. I learned to trust him more deeply through this process.
Today, I stand as Vintage Retroman, and I am proud to call myself the Hope Dealer. That name represents what I believe my music does. It deals hope to people who are struggling. It reminds people that they are not alone. It points people toward Jesus Christ, who is the ultimate source of hope and healing.
