One funky groove- “Cuphead Remix- Clip Joint Calamity -The Living Tombstone”

Don’t go dealing with the devil. My 8 year old son says it all of the time. I don’t blame him. When he first told me about Cuphead and his brother Mugman, i was so skeptical. Apparently the two signed a contract with the devil and are trying to get their souls back as the plot. Being primarily a retrogamer myself, I do not follow many of the newer games. Then i heard the song “Clip Joint Calamity remix” and saw the animation of the video and i was hooked! This is a funky song! It has a great combination of horns, keyboards, and percussion with a 1950’s big band vibe to it! After seeing the actual Cuphead gameplay for the PC and Xbox one, i was truly impressed. The old Walt Disney style characters are impressive, and the gameplay is superb! Take that along with a great soundtrack, and that is a recipe for success for years and sequels to come. Enjoy

Poem- Bittersweet Memories

It’s alright to think of past times and cherish the memories/

The pure love we share with others creates unique synergies/

As days goes on and hearts heal and yet and still it takes time/

People don’t understand thoughts many times, are bittersweet like vintage wine/

It’s quite alright to feel the pain of loss sometimes you have to/

You are only human in the flesh it’s only fair to be true/

To yourself, remember vulnerability builds agility/

And perseverance from past pain will create a new beauty/

But for now, until that happens don’t let anyone convince you/

That your feelings need to change, they haven’t walked in your shoes/

Whether it’s an old song from the 70’s or a trip to see family/

Or a flashback that traps your mind and your thoughts feel clammy/

Remember, you are not alone and there is hope for your future/

It may be hard to see because the evidence hasn’t manifested/

And when the pain has you feel as if you’re stuck in a stupor/

Remember the same One who allows testing, gives blessings and allows rest.

A VR music review “Billie Jean/Poison” medley by Straight No Chaser

That girl named Billie Jean is truly poison. By now in 2018, most of us know that according to legendary pop singer Michael Jackson, that regardless of what Billie Jean said, indeed the kid was not his son. Despite this knowledge, it still doesn’t prevent us from listening to this classic first released in 1982 over and over. Years later when the Billboard hit R&B group Bel Biv Devoe released Poison, we learned that you should never “trust a big butt and a smile” in 1990. When the talented accepella group Straight No Chaser decided to combine the two classic songs, they created nothing short of a masterpiece.

When the listener hears the initial beat box in the opening sequence of the medley with the bass line from the hit Billie Jean, you know it is going to be good. Then when the singers combine harmonies in singing”Girl i must warn you” from Poison over the Billie Jean beatbox, i was blown away! The group does an excellent job balancing the two songs in a call and response rhythm, combining the best elements of both songs from the 80’s and 90’s. By the time the listener hears the combination of the two songs in the chorus, then the switch up to the lyrics of Billie Jean in the second verse, the blend is remarkable. As a true music lover, i cannot get enough of this particular medley. Straight No Chaser has always been an impressive group in my opinion. This song is just a true testament of what happens musically when creativity takes over. Nicely done Straight No Chaser.

“Game over”, or is it? How to convert something “tragic” into something “fire”- by VintageRetroman

I remember back on the Holiday Season of 1991. The scene was Hanes Mall in Winston-Salem NC. As i reflect back on some of my favorite memories with my dad, this particular recollection stands out to me. There were two kiosks setup outside of KB toys, a very popular toy store back in the 80’s and 90’s. One kiosk had a Super Nintendo playing “Super Mario World” and the other kiosk had a Sega Genesis playing “Sonic the Hedgehog”. As my sister and i walked the halls of the mall with our parents, we saw the kiosks and ran frantically to the entrance of the toy store where the kiosks were. My sister grabbed the controller of the Super Nintendo for the very first time, and i watched on as she played (another kid was unfortunately playing the Sega at the time, so i had to wait my turn to play the lightning fast Sonic the Hedgehog 1). I was 8 years old at the time, and my sister was 11. As i marvelled at the bright colors and graphical capabilities of the Super Nintendo entertainment system, i noticed that the music and sounds of the 16-bit Super Mario World were so different and unique from the 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). I couldn’t believe how great the sound quality was, and the soundtrack was superb. The clarity of the sound stood out to me the most.

The other day my father passed away, and i was searching through my book of memories in my mind and this one came up. As i looked up video game music and trap remixes to cartoon theme songs with my 6 year old daughter, i came across this remix of the Super Mario World “game over” jingle. I was blown away by this musical piece of art by Phillip Schlosser and Hephesto Music. From the excellent use of the sample, to the dynamic rhythms of the percussion and dynamics, this piece is impressive. I love how smooth and simple the sample loop is. The best part is that the synthesizers are not overbearing, so the piece still manages to maintain its value of 1991 nostalgia, while bringing the versatility of a 2018 hip-hop instrumental. Upon sharing this YouTube clip with my brother, he said something that i felt really sums it up. Since it is a game over theme, my brother texted me and said, “They turned something tragic into something fire”. Wow, that is so true in this musical creation! Then i began to think, shouldn’t this be our goal in life as people? To turn something tragic into something good, or as my brother puts it, fire? Many of us are going through trials, hardships, and tragedy. Many of these negative experience in life are circumstantial. My father consistently had a track record of turning something tragic into something “fire”, or within this context, great! My hat goes off to Hephesto music and their creation. As you listen and enjoy this smooth creative instrumental, my desire is that we all think of ways to turn what is “tragic” in our lives into something “fire” or great! The fire of passion, the fire of purpose, and the fire of goodness to others. Love, peace, and happiness to all.

Tribute to My Father, 03/22/2018 from V.R. Rest in Peace Dad.

I truly can remember back as far as about 1987 in my life. I was born in 1983 so I was around 4 years old. My earliest memories of my dad was of him taking me and my older brothers and sisters fishing. I am the youngest of 8 children, so this was significant to me. My dad was the best fisherman I had ever met. We didn’t have much money growing up, so when we fished we did it not for sport, but to eat. My mom had a garden and kept fresh vegetables to cook. My father worked 2-3 jobs just to meet the basic necessities of life. We rarely went out to eat and even more rarely went anywhere outside our town. As I grew up I watched my dad work so hard with our family based cleaning business. My dad built his business in the late 80’s and early 90’s through hard work. My father was such an example of a strong man, not only to his 8 kids but his 25 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, my friends at school, the church and the community. He loved my mom more than life itself. They were married for 47 years! My dad is my hero because despite his mistakes he proved that you don’t have to be a perfect man to be a darn good one! Growing up I remember my father taking us to the drive-in movie theater because it was much cheaper and they had better food than the traditional cinema. He sacrificed to purchase our family the Nintendo Entertainment System and other forms of entertainment when he really didn’t have the money. He played football with us in the back yard. He took us to the Blockbuster video store on Friday nights to check out the latest new releases on VHS. He showed us how to have simple fun and save money through visits to the parks and picnics at nearby lakes. My love of all types of music came from him. To this day I love and appreciate every type of music, from folk to hip-hop, from 70’s and 80’s soft rock to contemporary Christian. My love for sports came from our family sitting in his room watching football and wrestling. Our family was and still are diehard Carolina Panthers fans (Being that we are from North Carolina). But before the Panthers came into the NFL in 1995, all of us loved the San Fransisco 49ers since I could remember (except my brother Deshawn who has always been a Cowboys fan). I’m talking the Joe Montana, Jerry Rice 49ers.  I remember the funny talks my pop had with my brothers and sisters. I remember the political debates between him and my mom in the 1988 and 1992 presidential elections (my mom being a moderate republican and my dad being a traditional Kennedy Democrat at that time). Then after their debate I can see my dad hugging my mom and giving her a kiss and a sarcastic “You don’t know what you’re talking about, but i love you anyway.” 🙂 He taught us all how to never give up! His marriage was a testament to that. Through example he taught me how to love and support my wife and our 4 children. As I sit here with tears in my eyes still finding it hard to believe my pop is gone, I cant help but reminisce on the times we had. Most importantly, my dad loved His Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He gave his life to Jesus about 7 or 8 years ago, so i find comfort in knowing that my dad is in the best place, Heaven. Rest in peace to my hero, my dad, my best friend Edward T. Price.

What is the mission of VintageRetroman?

I get the question often, what or who is Vintage RetroMan? What is the mission, the goal or the purpose of it? Vintage RetroMan is a brand, represented by a character who’s mission is trifold.

  1. To present proper retro representation from the 1970’s, 1980’s, and 1990’s culture, style, and music to a younger generation.
  2. To prove that the vintage culture and styles of the past are still popular and relevant today through blog articles and reviews.
  3. To bring the feelings of nostalgia to all people through retro products sold in good condition at a reasonable price.

I truly feel that our culture should never die. If you were born in the 70’s, 80’s, or 90’s, think back to the good times as a kid. We were the last generations before instant technology, smart phones, and social media. We went outside consistently and played. When we did play video games, they were 8-bit pixels and 16-bit graphics but so much fun! Vintage Retro Man is the defender of the ideals of vintage and retro, to make sure it never dies but gets passed down to future generations. Signing off…….

Zelda Poem- Link, A Hero’s Moment

Where did these green clothes come from, how did I get here?/

Why do I look around and there’s nothing but an open field here?/

I observe and see the boulders and a couple of trees/

In dusty Hyrule field, no weapon, magic, or rupees/

My name is Link, I just got word that Zelda is missing/

The King of Hyrule’s going crazy, the castle’s in a frenzy/

They say that Gannon, the evil villain riding his black high horse/

Is on an vile mission trying to collect the other Triforce!/

That will not happen under my watch, I may be young but I’m brave!/

I look across the field, not sure if I should enter that dark cave/

I enter slowly and the wise man speaks with a cautious tone/

Lays out the wood sword and says “Take this, It’s dangerous to go alone!”
